History was made in Vermont. Michael Jamrock of EnGaygedWeddings.com had the pleasure of interviewing JP Greg Trulson, who is credited with performing the FIRST legal gay marriage ceremony in Vermont.Special thanks to
JP Greg Trulson, and newlyweds Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan. More Photos Coming Soon! The time was 12:01 am on September 1st, 2009 and standing in front of Justice of the peace Greg Trulson was Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan, a couple of 17 years from Whitehall, NY. They could not wait another minute to get married, so they didn’t. Dressed in suits, in front of local and national media which included local NBC, CBS, Fox news affiliates as well as the national AP reporters and photographers, standing under a large mounted moose head, exchanging rings, and as the men promised their love to one another, 17 minutes later Bill & Bob made history. They were Legally married
EnGaygedWeddings.com recently sat down and spoke with Justice of the Peace, Greg Trulson, who performed the ceremony. I asked him, “What does it mean to you to be a part of the first gay marriage in Vermont?” He responded with his very nice and proper voice, “We made history here today!” I asked him what he meant by that, and when he responded he wanted to just spill all his emotions that I could tell he has been holding in for quite some time. It was almost like he was a proud father that wanted to go to the highest point of the highest mountain in Vermont and scream with joy. He said, “We are now equal. We have had civil unions in Vermont for quite some time, which Civil Unions have the exact same rights as a marriage, but they were different.” I asked him to elaborate on that, and his response almost floored me because we sometimes forget how absolutely unfair and unjust the gay community is treated. He said to me almost sternly, “Michael, yes we had civil unions with the same rights as marriage exactly same rights but we are still considered different. Ask anyone on earth, on any continent, in any country if they know what being married means and yes they do. It is the universal word for a couple that has professed their love to one another. Ask someone what a civil union is and even most Americans don’t know what it is. He went on to say, “You don’t have to go that far back in time to experience the same kind of discrimination. Go back as short a time of the mid to late 60’s and every store and every public place had separate water fountains. One water fountain for the Whites and one for the Blacks”. As he continued, I could tell that he has experienced this first hand and has put a lot of thought into his statements. He went on to say that “Yes they were separate water fountains but the funny thing, it was the same water from the same water source. It was just discrimination and separation.” The same he continued with the difference between civil unions and marriage. It may be the exact same thing like the water in those fountains but it is still different. Now when a gay couple goes to city hall in Vermont it proudly states Marriage License instead of civil union. We then got away from the politics of the situation and just talked about the wedding itself. I asked him, “What was the mood and the atmosphere like?” Ah that perked him up. He said, “It was electrifying. My adrenaline was through the roof, I was on a constant High. The lights and satellite dishes from the news trucks lit up the front of my lodge that I bet you could see it for miles.” He also told me the reporter from (AP) Associated Press literally ran out of the lodge as soon as the ceremony was over to get it up on the net as soon as possible. I then told him and this is how humble Greg is I asked him if he had realized how huge this story was on the internet. He had no idea. LOL After the ceremony Bill, Bob, Greg, and all the media shared in a champagne toast and celebrated. Greg said the media stayed for quite some time congratulating Bill and Bob and getting additional footage. On a final note Greg plans to marry his partner of 17 years Willie Docto on their civil union anniversary November 10th 2009. I asked him why they wanted to wait, and this just proves a gay couple is absolutely no different than a heterosexual couple. He said, “They wanted to wait for their civil union anniversary so they wouldn’t screw up remembering the dates.” Greg did give me the phone number to Bill and Bob in NY, and as soon as I get in touch with them I will bring you that interview as well.
