No two couples are alike; no two weddings need to be alike. You will help to design the ceremony of your dreams.

For thirty-five years I have been tailoring ceremonies to the tastes and backgrounds of the two people (and families) who are coming together.  I have worked with a wide variety of other clergy, but more often have conducted Jewish, interfaith, and same sex events by myself, always trying to create celebrations that are authentic, joyful, and respectful of different cultures, languages or religions where this applies. I always welcome the participation of friends and family members in blessing you on your wedding day.

Generally, I meet a couple for three work sessions of several hours each. We examine the historical meanings of various rituals and decide how we wish to represent these at your ceremony. You may decide to shape your own vows, write your own ketubah, choose your own readings, and consider which English translations or paraphrases of the Hebrew blessings most closely represent your personal philosophies. You may even choose to revise them to express your own sense of gratitude and wonder at finding your love in each other.

As a former opera singer and High Holy Day cantor at the 92nd St. Y, I will bring the beauty and elegance of Jewish music to your event, and include just enough explanation so that all your guests will feel included, honored, and informed.

I look forward to working with you.

Reviews & Wedding Testimonials

Dear Cantor Rous,

Thank you so much for playing such an important and special role in marrying us. We had such a great time during the ceremony and couldn't have felt more comfortable or in better hands. For my parents it was incredibly important to have a cantor who had a beautiful voice that could stir the hearts of our guests. For us, it was important to have a cantor that understood or shared our points of view about religion, gender, and ritual. We felt incredibly lucky that we were able to find all these things in you. We enjoyed meeting with you in your home to discuss all these things and more, and really appreciated the time you spent with us.

Dear Dan,

Thank you so much for officiating our wedding. You did such a beautiful job with the ceremony, and all our relatives and friends have been saying that they loved your explanations of all the Jewish and Indian traditions. Thank you for helping us arrange a ceremony that was so personally tailored to us!

Dear Cantor Dan,

We can't tell you enough how much we enjoyed working with you on our wedding -- the whole experience was so profound and moving to both of us.  Everyone we spoke with has been so effusive in their praise of you! They felt a part of something unique and personal and we thank you for making it so.

Dear Dan,

We just want to thank you so much for leading what was a perfect and beautiful ceremony. For me it was my most favorite part of the entire evening! Both sides of the family have raved about how informative, meaningful, moving, and magical it was. We couldn't agree more.
