Miss Ewald began her classical guitar studies in her native Washington, D.C., as a protogée of Sophocles Papas, a colleague and friend of the legendary Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, who invited her to study with him after hearing her play. She made her debut at age 12 at the Washington Guitar Society. Her further training includes studies in classics at St. John’s College, Annapolis; the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; a B.A. in classical guitar performance from Bard College; postgraduate work in the Suzuki Method at the Hartt School of Music and the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. Ms. Ewald has concertized since her San Francisco days and has appeared in numerous festivals: the Boston Early Music Festival, Santa Barbara Bach Festival, Laurel Festival, and Manitou Festival. She has also been awarded grants for concert series by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Corporate clients include the USTA Open, Fidelity Investments, the Boston Early Music Festival and Philips Corp. Frequently a soloist and ensemble player in the New York metropolitan area, she also teaches in her roving SoNo Guitar Studio, named for its roots in the arts district of the same name. She is now in her fifth season with The New York Continuo Collective, a large ensemble (of 30) specializing in baroque performance practice.
